All Rights Reserved.): Adherence of Streptococcus pneumoniae to the human epithelial cell line HEp-2 3 h after infection as seen by high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy. The capsular structure of pneumococci was visualized on the basis of a lysine acetate-ruthenium red fixation protocol. This modified fixation allows for the detection of different amounts of capsular material of adherent and nonadherent pneumococci (phase variation).
