Cover photograph (Copyright © 2006, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Streptococcus pneumoniae colonizes the upper respiratory tract. Immunofluorescence is used to show the acute inflammatory response that follows the initial colonization in a mouse model. Pneumococci, stained red with antiserum to the type-specific capsular polysaccharide, are seen at 3 days postinoculation predominantly associated with neutrophils, stained green with a monoclonal antibody to Ly6-G. The epithelial surface is shown by areas stained blue with 4′-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole. Consecutive images in a Z stack at a magnification of ×200 are shown. (See related article on page 83.)
