All Rights Reserved.): Fluorescent in situ hybridization was used to localize Vibrio cholerae El Tor O1 strain P27459 within ileal crypts of 6-week-old C57BL/6 mice 6 h after oral inoculation. Bacteria were labeled with both a Texas Red-labeled eubacterial rRNA probe and a fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled V. cholerae-specific rRNA probe. All bacteria detected in the streptomycin-fed mice were V. cholerae and thus appear orange. The background fluorescence from the cells shows that the bacteria are present between the villi.
