Cover photograph (Copyright © 2007, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Antigen presentation in the context of major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) by host cells that are actively infected with Toxoplasma gondii. Gamma interferon/tumor necrosis factor alpha-activated primary astrocytes infected with transgenic T. gondii parasites secreting the model antigen ovalbumin (OVA) into the parasitophorous vacuole are shown. Blue (4′,6′-diamidino-2-phenylindole staining), astrocyte nuclei and parasite nuclear and apicoplast DNA. Green, MHC-I/OVA epitope complexes labeled with the specific monoclonal antibody 25D1.16 (kindly provided by R. Germain, National Institutes of Health). Only infected cells present OVA in the context of MHC-I. (See related article on page 5200.)
