Cover photograph (Copyright © 2007, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Pseudomonas aeruginosa surrounding a blood vessel from an infected mouse. Bacteria were detected by using a Cy3-labeled fluorescence in situ hybridization probe and appear red around the vessel walls. Red blood cells within the lumen appear pink, and 4′,6′-diamidino-2-phenylindole-stained host cell nuclei appear blue (magnification, ×40). P. aeruginosa is one of the few bacterial species known to cause perivascular cuffing, which precedes blood vessel invasion and bacteremia. (See related article on p. 3715.)
