By day 2 postinfection, numerous CD11c+ cells (green) are detected in the subepithelial region of the infected colon, in close proximity to epithelial cells infected by C. rodentium. The C. rodentium effector protein Tir (red) designates the location of C. rodentium-infected epithelial cells. 4′,6-Diamidino-2-phenylindole staining (blue) shows the host cell nuclei.
