AB Four mycobacterial preparations directly stimulated human blood monocytes and alveolar macrophages to produce tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Monoclonal antibody against TNF blocked (99%) TNF activity. Lipopolysaccharide was not responsible for the TNF activity generated; activity was unaffected in the presence of polymyxin B.
