  • a Apoptotic cells were detected in BAL fluids by the TUNEL technique. Percentages of total apoptotic cells were determined after counting 500 to 1,000 cells/slide in randomly selected fields, using an oil immersion fluorescence microscope. In parallel, percentages of apoptotic neutrophils and alveolar macrophages over the total number of each cell type were determined. Results are expressed as means ± SEM of 6 to 12 experiments.
