  • a BSMC monolayers grown in 11-mm-diameter culture tubes were infected with 106 IFU of C. trachomatis D/IC Cal 8 or C. pneumoniae TW-183. Mock-infected cells were inoculated with a suspension of lysed BGM cells.

  • b Inclusions per coverslip were counted after immunofluorescence staining at 72 h after infection. Values are means (with standard deviations) of three experiments.

  • c IL-6 concentrations in culture supernatants were determined by ELISA at 48 h after infection. Results are means (with standard deviations) of three experiments.

  • d Significantly different from values forC. pneumoniae-infected cells (Welch t test, P ≤ 0.03).

  • e Significantly different from values forC. pneumoniae-infected cells (Welch t test, P ≤ 0.001) and mock-infected cells (Welch ttest, P ≤ 0.04).
