  • a Each cytokine level was measured by using a capture ELISA kit. Human PBLs (106 cells) were incubated for 24 h with either freshly freed HGE agent (100 bacteria per cell) or rP44 (1 μg/well) including other treatments (1 μg/well).

  • b Culture supernatants were used to measure the cytokine levels because there were no differences between the levels in culture supernatant and those in supernatant plus cell lysate. The assay detection limits of IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6 were 1, 4.4, and 0.7 pg/ml, respectively. The values are the means ± standard deviations of data from triplicate wells. The data are representative of three independent experiments.
